Many adolescents do not respond to first- and second-line treatments for depression, and there is limited research data to guide treatment beyond this point. Through studies such as the Treatment of Adolescent Depression Study (TADS) and the Treatment of Resistant Depression in Adolescents (TORDIA) study, we understand typical response rates and factors associated with non-response to treatment. Clinicians can learn to identify and address these factors, which may increase the likelihood of treatment response. Furthermore, there are several interventional approaches such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and ketamine, that have emerging evidence in youth suggesting favorable response rates in treatment-resistant depression.

The target audience for this continuing education program is mental health providers and clinicians working with individuals with mental health diagnoses. Materials are appropriate for learners with an introductory level of understanding about mental health concerns.

Educational Objectives:

Following this presentation, participants will be able to…

  • Identify and describe treatment-resistant depression in youth
  • Identify factors associated with treatment resistance in their patients
  • Describe therapeutic approaches to treatment-resistant depression
